Medicare offers the best coverage for seniors. But, with so many Medicare plans to choose from, how can you know if you have the best coverage?
Original Medicare
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) is the standard, basic Medicare coverage plan. You have to have it to get any other coverage plans. Having another plan may fill in the coverage needs that Original Medicare alone doesn’t offer, so you may just need to go out and find it.
However, perhaps you just want the minimum coverage and hassle. Don’t let that stop you from looking into other Medicare plans because something out there can probably make it even better.
Prescription Coverage
Suppose you have to purchase prescription drugs regularly. In that case, Part D coverage is probably the best way to cover your most frequent out-of-pocket costs. If you just have Original Medicare, shop around for Part D plans in your area that cover the prescriptions you need.
Or, perhaps you already have a Part D plan, but you’re paying too much for coverage you don’t need, or your plan doesn’t cover the prescriptions you need. A better plan may be out there. You can switch Part D plans or enroll in a new one during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15th through December 7th. Medicare Advantage may also include Part D coverage, which may be a great option to get more useful benefits.
All Coverage Under a Single Plan
Medicare Advantage is one of the most popular, best plans for Medicare enrollees. Need prescription drug coverage? You can get it through an Advantage plan. Want reduced medical costs without paying a high premium? A Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan may be right for you. Want more flexibility? Go for a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan. No matter what, your out-of-pocket costs will be reduced.
If you don’t have an Advantage plan or are unsure if your current plan is right for you, the best way to find out is by comparing your options. Shop around and see what’s available—you may find the perfect plan.
If You Hate Out-of-Pocket Costs…
…You may need a Medigap plan. Medigap covers your Original Medicare out-of-pocket costs, including your coinsurance, copayments, deductibles, and more. With ten different plan options, you can decide which coverage is right for you.
